Two people have been arrested and charged in connection with the violent theft of a car in Vaughan, filmed by the camera on the bell.
The incident happened just before 1 pm on Tuesday, in front of a house near the Pearl and Drummond crescents, west of Kiel Street and south of Teston Road.
According to the York Regional Police, a man and a woman armed with pistols confronted a man in his alley and asked him to hand over his wallet, phone and keys. It is alleged that the suspects stole the man’s black Audi Q5 in 2020 before fleeing the scene.
The victim was not injured.
On June 1, at about 10:30 a.m., Peel police patrolled near the center of Meadowvale Center in Mississauga and found the stolen Audi.
Investigators said a man and a woman in the jeep tried to escape, but police detained them shortly afterwards.
Police also say the suspects threw the bag away while trying to escape. The bag reportedly contained a loaded pistol magazine that officers found in the vehicle.
Prayer Osakpemwehuan, 18, of Toronto, and 19-year-old Kafui Setsofiah, of Mississauga, are charged with robbery with a firearm, unauthorized possession of a prohibited device or ammunition, negligent possession of a firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition or ammunition contrary to the prohibition order, violation of probation and failure to fulfill an obligation.
“It was an armed and forcible hijacking of a car, the impact of which is felt not only by the victim, but also by the whole community. This arrest shows once again that crime knows no borders, “Peel Deputy Chief of Police Nick Milinovic said in a press release issued Thursday.
The incident is one of several recent armed car thefts that have prompted Toronto police to set up a task force to steal cars.
Milinovic said the arrests show “how communication, co-operation and co-operation can bring to justice those who are victims of our communities”.
“I am proud of the officers on the front line, whose watchful eye led to the arrest of two people,” he said.
York Regional Police Chief Jim Maxwin thanked his Peel colleagues for their “diligence and help in this case.”
“We will continue to lead this working group within the GTA to further coordinate law enforcement efforts to combat these crimes,” he said.
This investigation is ongoing.
