Citing several sources, Detroit Free Press education reporter David Jesse reported that the UofM Board of Regents will officially hire Ohno at its meeting Wednesday. There are no contract details, including when Ohno will start or his salary.
Ono was born in Vancouver but grew up in Philadelphia and Baltimore. He holds a BA in Biological Sciences from the University of Chicago and a PhD in Experimental Medicine from McGill University.
Ono was named UBC’s 15th president in 2016. Previously, he was the 28th president of the University of Cincinnati and also served as president of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, among many other leadership and academic positions. The 59-year-old has complied.
The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 and is one of the top-ranked universities in the US with over 65,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students. UBC was founded in 1908 and has about the same number of students. Although UM is nearly 100 years older than UBC, both universities have had the same number of presidents.
Ohno earned over $600,000 a year at UBC.
