There were ugly scenes this afternoon as far-right protesters held a rally in York city centre.

Ann Marie Waters, the anti-Muslim leader of the Britain For party, attempted to make a speech to a group of her supporters in St Helena Square.

She was shouted down by a large group from York Stand Up Against Racism, chanting “Say it loud, say it clear, refugees are welcome here”.

They were face to face, separated by barriers put up by the police.

Thanks to the chanting at the anti-racism rally in York, far-right speakers struggled to be heard.

There was a heavy police presence around St Helena Square.

Several of the far-right protesters made obscene gestures at the counter-demonstration.

On more than one occasion, the police intervened to protest with For Britain supporters.

Meanwhile, York shoppers thronged the surrounding streets.

York’s Stand Up to Racism rally arrived early and were in positions with placards proclaiming “All Refugees Welcome”.
