Ukraine urges evacuation in southern Kherson region ahead of counterattack

Ukraine’s deputy prime minister called on residents of the southern Kherson region on Sunday to evacuate ahead of a Ukrainian counterattack against Russian forces.

Irina Vereshchuk went on Ukrainian national television to warn of fighting and artillery fire in the coming days, according to Reuters.

“I know for sure that there should not be women and children there and they should not become human shields,” Vereshchuk said.

Russia’s war in Ukraine, now entering its fifth month, is now being fought mainly in Donbas, the country’s industrial heartland to the east.

Russian forces captured the city of Kherson, located northwest of the Crimean peninsula, at the start of the invasion this spring. Since then, Russian troops have taken control of other key cities, including Siverdonetsk and Lisichansk.

After losing ground, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky vowed to regain control of all the territory Russia had seized.

“Let them really consider what they went through this time and how much they paid for it.” Because their current reports will turn to dust, just like the previous ones,” Zelensky said earlier this month.

It is not clear how many residents remain in the Kherson region, but about 300,000 people lived there before the war.

While Russia took control of the city of Kherson early on, Ukrainian troops continued to fight to regain control of the city. Russia loses partial control over Kherson towards the end of May.

Kherson is a strategic city in eastern Donbass, especially if Russia moves to capture the port city of Odessa.
