Union Station was locked down after a man was critically injured in a shooting downtown

Union Station is on lockdown after a shooting that left one person in life-threatening condition, Toronto police said.

Around 7:50 p.m., Toronto police said they responded to a shooting in the area of York Street and Bremner Boulevard in the Entertainment District.

Police said they later found one man in life-threatening condition.

Paramedics also responded to the scene but said they did not transport anyone.

A large number of officers and police cars could be seen outside the Scotiabank Arena on Saturday night.

Police have not released any suspect information at this time.

The blockage at the busy station comes as throngs of people poured into the downtown area for a number of events over the weekend, including a Blue Jays game and the Honda Indy Toronto.

Subway service is suspended between Osgoode and Bloor-Yonge stations on Line 1, the TTC said. It is unclear how long the shutdown will last.

Go Transit and Union-Pearson Express (UP Express) service is also affected by the shooting.

“GO trains are not entering or leaving Union Station at this time and are being held until police determine everyone is safe,” Metrolinx spokeswoman Fanny Sunshine told CP24.com. “All our staff are safe and secure.”

She said safety is the transit agency’s first priority, adding that they will keep customers informed of developments.

SHOOT COMES AS TORONTO CELEBRATES 10 YEARS SINCE DANZIG

The city’s latest shooting comes as Toronto marks the 10th anniversary of the Danzig Street shooting, in which two people were fatally shot and dozens injured after gunfire erupted between rival gangs at a neighborhood party on July 16, 2012.

Shayan Charles, 14, and Joshua Yasay, 17, died in the incident, one of Toronto’s worst mass shootings.

The fatal shooting has also become a symbol of the city’s ongoing fight to curb gun violence.

Earlier in the day, the city said the Toronto sign would be dimmed Saturday night “in honor of the 2012 Danzig tragedy, the lives lost and those who continue to be affected by gun violence in Toronto.”
