The policy of compulsory vaccination against COVID-19 of the Toronto Police Department has ended, allowing the return of unvaccinated officers and employees who have been released on leave.
In a statement, the spokesman for TPS Const. Alex Lee said the forces had decided to remove the vaccine requirement “in response to the current public health and occupational health context of the pandemic and the unique nature of work and jobs”.
“As the pandemic develops, the service has continued to evaluate its approach in the light of these factors and the specific context of occupational health for our workplaces,” Lee said.
The TPS vaccination policy was announced in August 2021. It initially put 205 members – 117 uniformed officers and 88 civilians – on indefinite leave after missing the deadline to vaccinate or disclose their status.
The force said 99 percent of its members had been fully vaccinated and all new recruits should be vaccinated against COVID-19.
Lee said on Wednesday that there are currently 101 employees on leave who will be able to return on June 21.
“Officers will be deployed according to the operational requirements of the service, and civilian members will return to their original roles,” he said.
“The Office continues to ensure that our workplaces remain safe, which includes ongoing measures against COVID-19 if necessary.
