A famous former Burton pub was set on fire today. Smoke was seen rising into the sky from the old Dart Inn, on Short Street, Stapenhill. A cordon was set up as firefighters dealt with the large fire this afternoon, Sunday, June 12.
Permission for planning was soon given to demolish the old pub, which has been the target of vandals since it closed five years ago. The problems have even led current owners to say they regret ever buying the property.
But last month, after more than a year of delay, the East Staffordshire district council approved a plan to demolish the pub with 11 new houses to be built on the site.
The short street was closed as crews dealt with the fire, and residents behind the cordon watched the drama unfold. On the other side of Burton was thick black smoke from the building.
