A US marshal and his dog K-9 were shot dead while serving an arrest warrant in the Northwest country on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
A Chicago police officer returned fire but did not hit the two suspects who were arrested, a police statement said.
One of these suspects opened fire at about 1:20 p.m. in Block 5200 on West Belmont Avenue while a U.S. marshal was serving an order, police said.
The marshal drove the injured K-9 to the MedVet Chicago Clinic about 3 miles east of Belmont and California Avenues, Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.
The Marshal of the Great Lakes Refugee Task Force later learned he had been shot in the arm and an ambulance was called, but refused to be taken to hospital, Langford said. The condition of the dog has not been reported.
The officer who opened fire was placed on a routine 30-day duty while the Civil Police Responsibility Service investigated the use of force, police said.
A Chicago police officer was shot and seriously injured Wednesday as he tried to stop traffic in Englewood on the south side. The armed man, who was identified by the police, remains at large.
