No civilians were injured when the F / A-18E Super Hornet crashed in the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County at around 2.30pm local time, the US Navy said in a press release.
The name of the pilot is not reported.
The plane was based at the Lemur Naval Air Station in California. The investigation is underway, the Navy said.
The throne is about 160 miles northeast of Los Angeles.
