US Open 2022 – Sights, sounds and highlights of the second round

BROOKLINE, Massachusetts – In the first round of the US Open in 2022, many things happened. The necessary drama about Phil Mickelson? Check. A few thrown bats? You bet. Kids running with the ball of defending champion John Ram on the 18th hole? GOOD. Wild turkeys on the course? Sure.

Friday’s second round promises even more.

Canadian Adam Hadwin (4th floor) took the lead one day at The Country Club in Brooklyn. Hadwin is on the field as a substitute and had a 1-shot lead over Rory McIlroy and four others. McIlroy, who won the RBC Canadian Open last week, was one of those who threw a bat on Thursday, during a motivated first round in which he scored 67.

What will happen in the second round? we’ll find out.

Cameron Young is coming up

What is the best thing you can do if you are trying to qualify for the US Open? Let Cameron Young demonstrate. By the way, this is the first hole in one at the US Open after the first round of the event in 2020 and this is the first ace in the PGA tour of Cameron Young.

Taren is a surprising leader

If you are surprised to see the name of the English Callum Taren at the top of the list, you are not alone. This is the second time the rookie on the tour has qualified for the US Open and the second time he has arrived without his clubs.

At the US Open 2019 in Pebble Beach, his clubs appeared only on Wednesday. He borrowed Tyrell Hatton’s bats until his bag arrived. After Taren failed to get rid of the RBC Canadian Open last week, his clubs did not reach Boston. He played a training round with only a wedge. Taren, who played at Radford University in Virginia, has only one place in the top 10 on tour and has missed 10 cuts in 17 starts. “Mark Schlabach.”

Birds of feathers

Scotty Scheffler, the best player in the world golf rankings, shot 2 less in the first round and climbed the rankings on Friday. On par-5, the 14th hole, Scheffler stopped to cross his path with a wild turkey, then made an eagle over the hole.

Mickelson will probably miss the cut

The good news for Phil Mickelson, after he limped from the ninth green at The Country Club near Boston on Friday, is that he won’t have to worry about dropping out in his next start in two weeks.

Mickelson did not do so at the US Open, although he played better in the second round on Friday. He mapped a 3-over 73, reducing his total by 36 holes to an 11-over. He was 143rd out of 156 players when he left the field.

“I was enjoying the week. I just wanted to play better,” Mickelson said afterwards, before jumping into a company SUV with his team and leaving the club.

“Shlabah.”

If you are not the first …

After shooting his second even-numbered 70 in the tournament to stay level over the weekend, Brooks Koepka was asked on Friday about the kind of confidence he usually shows even after bad rounds.

“I’m not coming here hoping for second place,” Koepka said. – I’m pretty sure.

Brooks Koepka shot 3-under 67 in Round 2 to reach 3 of the lead.

Koepka’s confidence also comes with a dose of carefreeness. He belittled his eagle on the 14th par-5 and when asked about his feelings after disappointing finals in the last two major tournaments, he mentioned that after his T-55 final at the PGA Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he was “ready to get married “and” waiting for this party “, but that he was” furious “after missing the Masters cut.

“I feel like I played much better than maybe the results,” said the four-time big winner. “I have a feeling it was very close. Maybe the results don’t reflect it, but it’s only a matter of time.” “Paolo Ugeti.”

Local knowledge?

Scott Stallings is from New England, so he knows how to navigate the area. The man who introduced him to the first one before Friday’s second round … not so much.

Stallings grew 45 minutes from The Country Club. So while most people around the first T-shirt waited for McIlroy, who was in the next group, Stallings would get some love when his name was announced. Then things went awry. Stallings was presented as by “War-chester, Massachusetts.” He is from Worcester, which is pronounced “Wu-ster” or “Woo-stah”.

The fans behind the T-shirt were having fun with it.

“Let’s go, War Chester.”

“Come on, War-chester, you understand that.”

Stallings started the day at 4 over, which is right around the cut line. If he spends the weekend, maybe they’ll fix his hometown.

Who is MJ Daffue?

An early leader of the 122nd US Open on Friday has 822 (and more) followers on Twitter as of Friday morning. Two years ago, he made $ 5,750 from the All Pro Tour. He is also a volunteer assistant coach in Houston. But after making a 6-under turn on Friday, MJ Daffue (pronounced “Duffey”) had a brief lead over Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick and three others. Dafu, 33, was born in South Africa and plays at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He has already won his PGA Tour card for 2022-23 through his good performance on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he is fourth in The 25. He qualified for his first major championship, sharing his medalist medals in qualifying in Springfield, Ohio and make the most of it so far. “Shlabah.”

Daffue later made a mess of par-5 14th hole on Friday. Somehow he pulled his tee onto a raised path near the hospitality area on the left. There were tents, spectators and an oak on the left and a temporary fence on the right. After his caddie, Cougars golf coach Jonathan Dismuke, handed him a hybrid, Daffue hit his ball from an artificial grass-like carpet. It is remarkable that his ball landed in the deep rough above the green. However, he did not receive his third shot, then passed the pin about 7 feet. He made two runs from there for backgammon, which brought him down to 4th floor. “Shlabah.”

“I’m passing right over you, sir.”

The US Open is not easy

The US Open likes to say that this is the most difficult test in golf. High rough often leads to high results. Enter PGA champion Justin Thomas on the 10th hole, where he started his second round on Friday.

According to data from a shot provided by the USGA, this has passed, oh, 5 feet. Thomas went on to open a double buggy. He followed this with a board on the 11th and another on the 14th.
