Second round 3-under 67 catapulted world number 1 Scotty Scheffler to co-chair of the 122nd US Open as the afternoon wave prepared to begin the game. Coming out through the gates on Friday, the Texan caught fire in the middle of his back nine and played a four-hole section in the 4 below, interrupted by an eagle on par-5 14th.
Scheffler now finds his name along with Nick Hardy, who signed for a 69-68 round. Four other men top the charts and have yet to start their second round, including four-time grand champion Rory McIlroy. Hot after successfully defending his RBC Canadian Open title, the Northern Irishman was almost flawless on his way to the first round without drums … through 17 holes.
McIlroy will try to overtake Scheffler with a strong second round, as well as those just a few strokes behind. Jon Rahm, Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris and Max Homa managed to turn red with their performances on Thursday and will hope for more of the same this afternoon. With a lot of action yet to come, these titans of the game will surely make their claims for this championship.
