Arredondo has been criticized for delaying action against the shooter.
Uvalde’s consolidated independent school district council has refused to take disciplinary action against district police chief Pete Aredondo during a meeting on Friday, Axios reported.
Aredondo came under fire from a May 24 shooting at Rob Elementary School, during which an 18-year-old shooter left 19 children and two adults killed.
The gunman had barricaded himself in a classroom with children, while Aredondo and 19 other police officers spent more than an hour waiting in the hallway outside.
Officers later told reporters that Aredondo was the one who decided that officers should not stand up to arms because he believed the gunman had barricaded himself.
The Texas Public Safety Department also accused Aredondo of failing to cooperate in investigating the incident.
Parents who waited outside during the shooting were reportedly trying to enter the school and rescue their children, handcuffed by police.
One parent managed to snatch his two children during the shooting. She later told CBS News that she was handcuffed and threatened by police because she spoke to the media about her experience with police officers as she tried to escape arrest and rescue her children.
During the district board meeting, officials announced that students and staff will not return to the Robb Elementary campus, which will be closed permanently.
The school, Axios said, will be moved to a new address, while the existing building will be turned into “something other than a school site,” said superintendent Hal Harel.
