Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy suffered a hip fracture as a result of a fall at his home in McLean, Virginia, on Wednesday night.
In a statement, the office of the 82-year-old Democrat said he would undergo surgery to restore his thigh on Thursday morning.
“After being born blind with one eye, the senator has struggled all his life with reduced perception of depth. He has suffered some remarkable blows over the years, but this has finally caught up with him, “said Leahy’s office.
Doctors determined that the best course of action was to operate “as much as possible,” his office said.
