A fire in Hamilton caused $10 million in damage.
Today’s massive Stoney Creek fire, which closed roads and knocked out power to parts of Hamilton, caused about $10 million in damage, the Hamilton Fire Department (HFD) has confirmed.
The fire broke out just before 4 p.m. on July 11 near Stone Church and Upper Red Hill Valley Parkway. As HFD moved to the scene, calls continued to come in prompting an upgrade to a second alarm fire.
As a result, resources from across the city went to the scene to help. When the first crews arrived on the scene, they found a massive, “well-involved” fire at the Central Park apartment complex.
Initial reports from the scene indicated that multiple units in various stages of construction were on fire. Meanwhile, strong winds fanned the flames 30 to 40 feet.

Gusts pushed the fire north through the houses under construction and up toward occupied homes across the street. Fire crews lined the street to put out the fire. A “large volume” of ropes and three raised ladders were needed to contain the flames.
The heat from the inferno reached such a high point that siding melted and windows broke from the sheer heat. As the radiant heat continued to climb, the balconies in the backyards of northern homes burned. Even the balconies of the second row in the back began to catch fire.
As these new homes caught fire, HFD upgraded the fire again to a fourth alarm. That sent about 70 firefighters to the scene – all kinds of operations.
Crews worked quickly to extinguish the fires on the balconies before they could move into the structure of the homes. After 30 to 45 minutes of battle, the firefighters were able to control the fire.
In total, the fire destroyed 23 built-up units in various stages of completion, 12 occupied dwellings suffered heat damage and many others suffered damage to their balconies. The fire also destroyed numerous vehicles on the street.
HFD estimates the fire caused approximately $10 million in damage. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the fire and all residents will be able to return home this evening.
Due to the extent of the damage, the Ontario Fire Service and Hamilton Police will be investigating the cause of the fire. Crews remain in place to tackle hot spots, but roads have reopened.
