Warframe developer Digital Extremes announced that it announced its new action MMO Soulframe at TennoCon 2022.

It is described as a free-to-play spin-off title of Warframe that draws inspiration from works as diverse as The NeverEnding Story (1984) and Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli projects such as Princess Mononoke (1997) – highlighting the clash between industry and nature.

Creative director Jeff Crooks added some additional insight:

“The fading [in ‘Soulframe’] is that the world itself is a bit angry about what has been done to it, and the grounds below tend to change by the day. So there will be proceduralism in the cave networks and crevices and so on underworld.

Instead of science fiction, the game is composed of fantasy themes – with cooperative player-versus-environment combat and procedurally generated environments. And instead of shooting, the focus here is on melee combat – so expect “much slower and harder” combat.
