The Pittsburgh Steelers shocked many of their fans throughout the NFL landscape when they selected Pittsburgh University quarterback Kenny Pickett with his 20th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
As the draft continued, with numerous deals going on the way to picking number 20, the Steelers stayed put and wanted to see what would happen to the quarterbacks on board.
Of course, everyone knew the prospects that might be the best option for Steelers. Malik Willis, Desmond Reeder and Kenny Pickett were the most famous names, but most speculated that Willis would be chosen if he and Pickett were available.
As the board unfolded, all the quarterbacks were available when it was Steelers’ turn to make their choice.
It was this tweet and video, by Johnny McGonigal, that tipped the hand before the election was announced that Pickett had been chosen by the Steelers. Watch the video below.
The celebration continued with Terrible Towels and the chanting “He’s staying home!”, Apparently talking about how Pickett will return to Pittsburgh, where he spent five years in college.
Finally, the TV news with Pickett dressed in black and gold for the first time in his young professional career.
Will Pickett be Steelers’ next quarterback franchise? This remains to be seen, but the only thing that will not change is the enormous pressure on Pickett’s shoulders as he moves from Pete to the professional ranks.
