Grant Shaps has unveiled a 22-point plan to deal with flight disruptions this summer as the government tries to avoid a repeat of the chaos at airports during the Easter and anniversary celebrations.

The transport secretary told lawmakers that “there is no excuse for widespread disruption” and that holidaymakers “deserve security.”

He said: “We estimate that the airports are busy while they are recovering, but the last thing we want to see repeated are the scenes we saw during Easter and a half of the semester.

“So, let me stress, there is absolutely no excuse for further widespread disruption. It has been more than 100 days since we announced the easing of travel restrictions, but to further support the industry as it prepares for the summer, today I am announcing a 22-point plan with a written ministerial statement to this chamber to help hire and retain staff, improving resilience so that passenger disruptions this summer are kept to a minimum.

“And to make sure that, unfortunately, if there are delays, passengers will receive appropriate compensation.”
