Wharton Forest Fire: Crews battling wildfires in Washington, Shamong, Hammont and Mulika

WASHINGTON TWP., New Jersey (WPVI) – Teams in South Jersey are working to control a raging wildfire that is burning in Wharton Forest.

Authorities say the fire burned at least 2,100 acres in the cities of Washington, Chamong, Hammont and Mulika. The fire was contained by 20%, the New Jersey Fire Department said Sunday night.

Batsto Village and all connected hiking and mountain bike trails are closed to visitors.

The Mulika River campsite, the Mulika River trail and the boat boats on the Mulika River are closed from the Asion recreation area to the village of Batsto.

These closures will remain in force until further notice.

Pinelands Adventures has stopped kayaking and canoeing, and the Paradise Lakes campsite has been evacuated by fire.

There are several closed roads:

  • Route 206 – from Chew Road to Stokes Road (starting at 12 o’clock)
  • Route 542 – from Green Bank Road to Columbia Road

No casualties were reported.
