Following the cataclysm of Roe’s Supreme Court against Wade and Planned Parenthood against Casey, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement that the states could not ban the abortion drug mifepristone.
“And we are ready to work with other parts of the federal government that seek to use their legitimate authorities to protect and maintain access to reproductive care,” he wrote.
“In particular, the FDA approved the use of the drug Mifepristone. “States cannot ban Mifepristone on the basis of disagreement with FDA expert assessment of its safety and efficacy,” Garland said.
But what is mifespristone?

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), mifepristone (mifeprex) is used with another drug called misoprostol to terminate a pregnancy that is less than 70 days old.

The drug blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to prolong pregnancy.
Mifeprex was first approved in 2000 and in 2016 the FDA approved an additional application based on data and information provided by the drug manufacturer.
After reviewing this application, the Agency stated that it had determined that mifeprex was “safe and effective when used to terminate a pregnancy in accordance with the revised label”.
Three years later, the FDA approved mifepristone 200 milligram tablets, a generic version of mifeprex.
The pills are taken approximately two days later, and anyone taking them should consult a doctor one to two weeks later.

People who should not take this medicine include those who have had an ectopic pregnancy, have problems with the adrenal glands, are currently being treated with long-term corticosteroid therapy, have bleeding problems or are taking an anticoagulant, have intermittent prochiria, and who have an IUD ( intrauterine device) on site.
Possible side effects of mifeprex include cramps and vaginal bleeding, nausea, weakness, fever, chills, vomiting, headache, diarrhea and dizziness within the first day or two after taking both medicines.

As of June last year, there were 26 reported deaths in women related to mifepristone since the product was approved, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy leading to death and several cases of severe systemic infection.
“Adverse events cannot be causally attributed to mifepristone due to concomitant use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, concomitant medical conditions, and gaps in patient health and clinical management information,” the FDA said. that no new safety alerts have been identified when reviewing adverse events.

Mifepristone for abortion has also been approved in France, the United Kingdom, Sweden and approximately 60 other countries.
According to data from the Gutmacher Institute, a research organization on abortion rights, medical abortion now accounts for 54% of abortions in the United States.
The FDA says people should not buy mifeprex or generic versions online because they “bypass important safeguards designed to protect [their] and drugs purchased from foreign Internet sources are not FDA-approved versions of the drugs.

Mifeprex must be ordered, prescribed and dispensed by or under the supervision of a qualified healthcare provider.
In December, the FDA lifted restrictions on access to abortion pills, allowing patients to receive them in the mail.
The pills are not available without a prescription; however, only a telemedicine visit is required to receive mifepristone and misoprostol in some areas. Access to telemedicine abortion is subject to state law.
