Winnipeg Police: Woman Charged After Newborn Found Dead in Trash

WARNING: This story contains disturbing details.

Police in Winnipeg arrested a 31-year-old woman after a newborn was found dead in a trash can.

The incident on May 3 was reported to the police.

Officers then went to a trash can in the back lane of Block 400 on Boyd Avenue, where they found the baby’s body. Police have identified the baby as Baby Moar.

Officers identified Baby Moar’s mother and arrested her at a nearby home. She was taken to hospital and admitted for medical precautions.

The accused was arrested without incident on May 10.

The Winnipeg Police Department for Child Abuse is investigating and finding that the baby was born in a home in the Garden City neighborhood.

Police say baby Moir was hidden in a trash can in the back lane. Police said the baby was believed to be alive when it was placed in the trash.

Const. Claude Chancy of the Winnipeg Police Department said he could not say how long the baby had been in the trash.

On June 7, police arrested a suspect at the Hedgingley Women’s Correctional Institution, where she was detained.

Janine Rosa Moir, 31, has been charged with manslaughter and manslaughter. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

The suspect remains in custody.

Chancy noted that the indictment “speaks of the intent and planning of the crime.”

“In this case, after consulting with the Crown, the charge of manslaughter was what was raised,” he said.

Chancy added that Baby Moar was the 23rd victim of murder in Winnipeg this year.

“We presented it to the public because it’s something out of the ordinary,” he said.

“Of all the murders we’ve had this year, this is not a common incident.”

Chancy said the baby’s death was “extremely traumatic” for the family, the community and the first to respond to the incident.
