Yair Rodriguez got what he wanted, but not in the way he expected.
The UFC featherweight defeated Brian Ortega in the main event of UFC on ABC 3 on Saturday after a shoulder injury ended the fight in the first round.
In official results, Rodriguez (14-3 MMA, 9-2 UFC) defeated Ortega (15-3 MMA, 7-3 UFC) by TKO (injury) at 4:11 of Round 1. The featherweight bout was the main event of UFC on ABC 3 at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York
The fight was quick, but Rodriguez clearly did the most damage as it went on.
The Mexican star peppered Ortega with leg kicks and shots to the head and body. Ortega pressured and controlled Rodriguez for a while against the cage. Shortly after, he got a takedown. Rodriguez would attempt an armbar and when Ortega slipped out of the submission, he dislocated his shoulder. Ortega immediately fell back to the canvas in pain and the fight was over.
With the win, Rodriguez got back into the win column after losing by decision to former champion Max Holloway in November. Rodriguez is 3-1 with one no contest in his last five UFC appearances.
Ortega, meanwhile, is now on a two-game losing streak. This is the first time in his career that he has back-to-back defeats. Ortega enters UFC on ABC 3 after a decision loss to Alexander Volkanovski in a featherweight title fight last September. It was the first time Ortega had suffered a loss outside of a championship fight.
