One person was killed and two others were injured in a shooting at a church on the outskirts of Birmingham, Alabama, on Thursday night, police said. A suspect, whose name was not named, is in custody.
The Vestavia Hills Police Department said it received a call from an active shooter at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church around 6:22 p.m. local time.
At a news conference Thursday night, Vestavia Hills police captain Shane Ware said a total of three people had been shot. One victim died and two others were hospitalized, he said.
Ware did not provide a possible motive or detail about the circumstances of the shooting, although he said police believe there is no longer a threat to the community. There was no information on how the suspect was detained.
The church had posted on its website that it was holding a celebration between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m.
The FBI and the U.S. Marshal’s Office were among several federal and local agencies supporting the investigation.
