After the tumultuous 2021-22 season, it’s time to turn our full attention to the NBA Draft on Thursday night 2022. A number of exciting prospects will top the league’s off-season event, including Chet Holmgren (Gonzaga), Jabari Smith (Auburn), Paolo Banchero (Duke) ) and Jaden Ivy (Purdue). Who will be chosen first in general remains to be seen, but all four players will hear their names early on from NBA Commissioner Adam Silver.
The Orlando Magic have the best overall pick in the draft for the first time since 2004. After Orlando, the second is the Oklahoma City Thunder, followed by the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and Detroit Pistons to finish the top five. While the order is set, anything can happen during the draft, as the teams are busy working with the phones to wheel and hand out choices. Numerous exchanges had already taken place before the draft, as the Lakers won the Magic’s 35th pick, while the Cavaliers handed out their second round to the Kings. The Portland Trail Blazers also swapped their choice from the first round of the 2025 Detroit Pistons for Jeremy Grant.
