A CNN reporter on Thursday called a Texas law enforcement official, saying reporters received “bad information” during a press briefing on the deadly mass shooting in Uwalde, Texas, at an elementary school.

“Our job is to report the facts and we can answer those questions later. I don’t have enough information, “said Victor Escalon, regional director of Texas Public Safety at South Texas, during a news conference as he was unable to provide solid information and answered several urgent questions about Tuesday’s massacre.

Reporters at a briefing near Robb Primary School – where an 18-year-old shooter killed 19 children and two teachers in a fourth-grade classroom – became increasingly frustrated when Escalon could not answer certain questions about police response to the massacre and received conflicting reports from the state agency.

“You guys said [the shooter] was barricaded. Can you explain to us how it was barricaded and why you guys can’t break through that door? “CNN correspondent Shimon Prokupets Escalon asked, prompting law enforcement officials to say,” I’m taking all your questions into account. “

“You must be able to answer that question now, sir,” Prokupets said back to Escalon. “Because we were given very bad information, so why don’t you clear it all up now and explain to us how your officers were there for an hour, yes, rescuing people, but still no one was able to enter this room. “

Escalon told a CNN reporter she would return with him.

“We want to tell you why. This is our job, so give us time. I accept all your questions. I’m bringing them back to talk to the team, “Escalon said before the briefing.

Escalon said Thursday that the shooter with an AR-15 rifle entered Rob Elementary School unhindered around 11:40 a.m. Tuesday after shooting and injuring his grandmother at their home.

It was an hour later when a U.S. Border Patrol tactical team stormed the classroom and shot and killed the shooter.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said a school resource officer “approached” and “engaged” the gunman before he entered the school building, but Escalon said Thursday that the bill was “inaccurate.”

“Initially, he entered without hindrance,” Escalon said, explaining that the door to the school building appeared to be unlocked.

Passers-by at the primary school told the Associated Press on Tuesday that some officers at the scene did not enter the building at the time because the attacker was inside, even when parents asked them to enter.

“I heard this information, but we have not yet confirmed it,” Escalon said on Thursday. “We have not checked whether the statement is true or not.”
