A dramatic moment of a burning car erupts as crowds watch the bustling Coventry Road

The onlookers gasped as a burning car exploded on a main road in Birmingham. Crowds gathered as the vehicle caught fire on busy Coventry Road in Small Heath on Saturday night, June 19th.

Dramatic videos shared with BirminghamLive show that the parked car caught fire when emergency services arrived around 10 p.m. Thick black smoke could be seen from the vehicle as people watched from the street near the Jenkins Street intersection.

A gasp can be heard as the footage then captures the moment the car explodes, sending sparks. A viewer claimed that two cars were affected by the fire and said that two ambulances had arrived.

The West Midlands Fire Department said only one vehicle was on fire when its crew arrived and that the owner of the vehicle could not be found. The fire was treated as accidental.

A spokesman for the West Midlands Fire Service said: “The original call was received at 9:51 p.m. on Saturday, June 19. One car is involved. One vehicle from Hay Mills and one from Highgate were sent to the scene, but only one from Highgate was required, the other was diverted.

“The West Midlands police were also present. The fire is believed to have been accidental.

“No owner was present when we arrived. We left the scene at 10:46 p.m.”

A spokesman for the West Midlands police confirmed that officers were not investigating the fire, adding: “We were only there to manage traffic.”

BirminghamLive contacted the West Midlands Ambulance Service for comment.
