But so far, investigators have only claimed that the driver drove dangerously due to impatience, and this outraged protesters, who said it should be treated as a dangerous push and run and possibly a hate crime.
Several people were slightly injured when the driver tried to bypass the group, which was walking in the so-called March for the recognition of residential schools on Saturday afternoon. Twenty-one children are known to have died while attending the former St. Mary’s Boarding School, according to the National Center for Truth and Reconciliation.
Demonstrators made their way from Heritage Park to the school, slowing traffic east on a short stretch of the Lougheed Highway around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, police said.

“The march had a traffic control face, as there is only one east lane, with no crossing points,” RCMP Const said. Harrison Moore in a news release.

Robertson heard a truck collide with one of the traffic control signs at the back of the march, and then saw the truck climb over his shoulder.

Several organizers called on the driver to stop.
“I turned around and looked back at him, and at that moment he stepped on the gas and walked toward us,” Robertson said.

Neither Edwards nor Ingraldi said they believed the incident was targeted.
“I believe he was just an angry driver,” Ingraldi said.
Moore told Postmedia News that although the hate crime charge has not been dismissed, investigators’ working theory is that the driver acted impatiently.
“Evidence from witnesses we spoke to is that the driver’s actions are indicative of a dangerous driver trying to pass the group in an obviously dangerous way,” Moore said. “We will investigate a number of potential violations, including dangerous driving and failure to stop at the scene.

He said that when investigators spoke to the driver, “they will certainly be interested to hear directly from him what his intentions were that day. If there is evidence that this is a hate crime, we will include this information in our indictment.

Moore said some witnesses have not yet been able to speak to police and are being followed by investigators before making this recommendation to the Crown’s lawyer.
“It looks like this driver is upset that his trip will be delayed by a few minutes,” Moore said. “There is no indication that this incident was targeted or that the driver’s actions had anything to do with the marching people or their cause.
“Trying to save a few minutes by endangering the lives of others is simply unacceptable,” Moore said in a press release.
Witnesses told police the truck’s registration number, but police said they were still trying to identify the driver.
