A woman died after being hit by a falling tree during strong thunderstorms in Ontario

A woman died after being hit by a tree during a severe thunderstorm on Saturday, Peel Regional Police said.

Police said the woman was hit shortly after 1:30 p.m. in the Belmont Drive and Burchbank Road area in Brampton.

“A large tree hit a woman walking during the storm,” police tweeted.

The woman was transported to the local hospital, where she died.

A Peel police spokesman told CBC News that the woman was walking between two houses when a tree fell on her.

Emergency crews managed to pull her out from under the tree and transport her to a hospital.

Police did not say the woman’s age or identity.

Meanwhile, Toronto police say they received a call shortly before 1:15 p.m. for marine rescue operations in the Lakeshore Boulevard West and Thirty Ninth Street areas.

The sea part saved a number of people.

EMS says no one has been transported to hospital.

Several cities were under warning of a thunderstorm as strong storms hit Toronto and most of the GTA on Saturday afternoon.

At the peak of the storm, Environment Canada announced that in some places wind gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour and hail the size of the little one were possible.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation. Heavy hail can damage property and cause injuries,” a statement from Environment Canada said.

“Widespread and extremely strong gusts of wind can destroy buildings with tornado-like damage, level large plantations of trees and throw vehicles off the road.

Thousands in Mississauga without electricity

Meanwhile, thousands of customers in Mississauga are without electricity due to the storm, says Alectra Utilities.

Hydro One is also responding to interruptions caused by thunderstorms in southwestern Ontario.

The company says it is trying to restore power as soon as possible.
