GTA, Southern Ontario is feeling the effects of a strong thunderstorm

A strong thunderstorm leaves traces of chaos in the Toronto and Southern Ontario area.

Environment Canada put much of southern Ontario on alert for a severe thunderstorm on Saturday.

The storm, marked by torrential rain and strong winds, moved from London, Ont., Through Waterloo and the Greater Toronto area.

“Take these storms seriously,” Global News chief meteorologist Anthony Farnell tweeted Saturday.

Environment Canada issued such a stern warning.

“Canadian environmental meteorologists are tracking a very dangerous thunderstorm that could cause destructive gusts of wind, hail and heavy rain,” the warning said.

“This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.

The storm was strong enough for Environment Canada to issue an intrusive emergency signal that is sent to television and radio stations and mobile phones.

Environment Canada meteorologist Daniel Liotta said winds of 132 kilometers per hour were measured in Kitchener, Ont. the airport was a sufficient risk to property and life to trigger the warning.

He said strong thunderstorms had only recently been added to the warning system.

According to Alert Ready, which operates the warning system for Canadian governments, no severe thunderstorm warning has been issued in the system for four years.

In order to trigger an intrusive signal for thunderstorms, winds of at least 130 kilometers per hour or hail at least seven centimeters in diameter must be measured, which is the size of a tennis ball, Liota said.
