The decision of the US Supreme Court to overturn Rowe’s decision against Wade resonates on this side of the border, leaving many to consider the life of a woman who does not have legal access to abortion.
For Alice Stewart of St. John’s, the knowledge is that without timely and legal access, she would surely have died.
Stewart suffered an ectopic pregnancy, a life-threatening condition in which a fertilized egg begins to develop outside the womb, usually in the fallopian tube.
She says access to abortion services is as much about fertility care as it is about reproductive rights.
Stewart says Canadians often like to think of themselves as isolated from what’s happening in the United States.
But she says the truth is that not all Canadians have equal access to abortion services.
She says people in rural areas who have limited resources do not have the same access as anyone in St. John’s or Toronto.
