The Apple WWDC event is only a few days away, and although software updates are guaranteed, we still don’t know for sure what hardware will debut. Updated versions of existing products are always possible, but what we really want to see from Apple is a completely new device.
Unfortunately, whatever chance Apple has of debuting with a new product this summer seems to be fading. For a moment, it seemed that Apple could finally unpack its mysterious AR / VR headphones, a device that has been the subject of countless rumors (1, 2 and 3) over the past few years. However, the prolific Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has already dashed our hopes for this opportunity, explaining in a tweet why the technology giant from Cupertino will not show its headphones this year.
There seem to be two reasons. First, mass production of AR / MR headphones (augmented and mixed reality) will not happen for some time, according to Kuo. So WWDC would be too early to reveal. In addition, if Apple debuts its headphones with full specifications, it will give competitors a copy plan.
Kuo then casually added that Apple would launch in 2023, echoing Haitong International Securities analyst Jeff Pu, who similarly said the product would be delayed until early 2023.

This does not necessarily mean that AR / VR headphones will not be mentioned at all. At some point, Apple will have to develop its mixed-reality platforms, so developers feel compelled to create AR / VR applications and optimize their existing ones for a new platform. Another part of the puzzle is iOS 16, which is expected to debut with several new AR / VR technologies. In addition, software developers have recently found references to “realityOS” in Apple’s App Store and GitHub upload logs, which suggests that we may learn about Apple’s mixed-reality platform before any hardware debut.
Even if we didn’t get our ticket to Apple’s mixed reality meta universe, there was a murmur about the company debuting with a redesigned MacBook Air or an updated MacBook Pro 13. We could also see an updated iMac and Mac mini running on the M2 chip. Of course, these are all assumptions.
