Apple’s MacOS 13 Ventura with a new Stage Manager tool announced at WWDC

Apple unveiled a new version of macOS at its global developer conference. The new operating system, macOS Ventura, includes a new Stage Manager tool and updates to Spotlight, Mail, Safari.

Enabled by the Control Center, the utility will automatically organize your open applications on the side of the screen, centering what you’re working on. Users can also drag icons from the desktop to the application icons on the side to import them quickly.

Spotlight is also available with new updates: it can now find images in your photo library and find text in images and download shortcuts. Spotlight has also been added at the bottom of the iOS home screen.

The Mail app search received changes, including more complete previews, instant suggestions, and typographical fixes. Safari has a new partition-sharing feature that allows users to see what partitions their friends are watching in real time and now supports biometric “Passwords” as a replacement for traditional passwords on multiple supported platforms. (Apple, Google, and Microsoft pledged earlier this month to support password-free access to all of their mobile, desktop, and browser platforms.)

The operating system also gives users the ability to “transfer” FaceTime conversations between iPhone and Mac, allowing users to effectively use the iPhone camera (probably much better) as a webcam instead of their Apple computer. Continuity Camera includes support for central scene and Apple portrait mode.

Apple also announced Metal 3, which will “unleash the full potential of Apple Silicon for years to come,” according to the main note.

Apple has long aimed to bring macOS closer to its mobile counterparts, a process that this update continues. The last few versions of macOS have transferred the main features of iOS (including Focus and Shortcuts), as well as design elements of its icons, windows and menus to the Mac. It is anticipated that this overhaul will continue to universalize the Apple enthusiast’s experience on all devices, especially in tandem with new features focused on continuity, such as Universal Control.
