Biden to visit Uwalde to “mourn” and demand “action” on weapons, says White House

The White House announced Thursday that President Biden will visit Uwalde, Texas, on Sunday.

Biden’s visit will take place on May 29, almost a week after the alleged shooter Salvador Ramos killed 19 students and two teachers at Rob Elementary School.

“On Sunday, May 29, the president and first lady will travel to Uwalde, Texas to mourn the community that lost twenty-one lives in the horrific shooting at an elementary school,” the White House said in a statement.

White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre said Biden would go to Uwalde, Texas to “offer his comfort” and “grieve with family and community.”

Jean-Pierre also said Biden would call on Congress to “take action.”

“He will go clear on Sunday to offer his consolation to grieve with family and community. But at the same time, he will call on Congress to take action because it has taken too long and now is the time to act, “said Jean-Pierre.

In a speech Tuesday night after the shooting at Rob Elementary School, Biden appealed to the White House, saying the United States needs tougher gun laws.

“Why are we ready to live with this carnage?” Why do we continue to allow this to happen? “Where on earth is our backbone so we have the courage to deal with this and face the lobbies?” Biden said. – It’s time to turn this pain into action.

He also sent a message to “those who obstruct, delay or block the laws on common sense weapons.”
