Bill Stepien, former Trump campaign manager, withdraws from January 6 hearings

Former Trump campaign manager Bill Stepien will not testify before an elected House of Representatives committee investigating Monday’s January 6 Capitol riot over a “family emergency,” the committee said.

Driving the News: A source familiar with Stepien’s thinking told Jonathan Swan of Axios that he had been summoned but did not want to testify and could hardly be considered a “friendly” witness.

Status of the game: Instead, Stepien’s legal adviser “will appear and make a statement in the minutes”, according to the commission. The commission will also show footage of his recorded testimony instead of his testimony, Axios confirmed.

  • Two familiar sources confirmed to Axios that Stepien’s wife had given birth.

What we are looking at: Monday’s hearing will focus on former President Trump’s “Big Lie” – declaring victory in the 2020 presidential election, even though he knows there are no numbers to win.

Others planned to testify include:

  • Bung J. “BJ” Pak, Trump-appointed former US lawyer in Atlanta, who abruptly resigned the day before the Capitol uprising.
  • Former Fox News editor Chris Stewworth.
  • Election Attorney Benjamin Ginsberg and former Philadelphia Commissioner Al Schmid.
