Aviation sector “unwilling to prepare”
The aviation sector is reluctant to “prepare” for the thousands of people who arrive due to increased costs, said the CEO of the Airline Management Group.
Asked what the industry could do to meet demand, Peter Davis told LBC: “Well, they need to prepare as quickly as possible in terms of staff, especially at airports for sure.”
However, he said they are often reluctant to do so.
“I arrived back in the UK a few weeks ago at Terminal 2 in Heathrow and had to wait 56 minutes to cross the electronic gates,” he said. “It was a snake, which is a good way to move people.
“It was moving, but the problem, of course, was that once you get to the electronic gates, very few people are rejected, maybe 10% because their passport is wrong or something, but all the gates there were open.
“It wasn’t like having only two or three – you had, I think, about 20 gates.
“So when thousands of people arrive in Heathrow at seven in the morning and this has been happening for years, when you have a lot of people arriving by night flights, then you have to be prepared to do it for sure you can handle these people.
“But, of course, it costs money and it costs space, and people are often reluctant to do that.”
