As the summer heat sets in, the provincial government is tightening burning restrictions.

Effective at noon on Friday, Category 2 open fires will be prohibited in the southern interior of British Columbia, including the Kamloops and Southeast Fire Centres. Campfires remain permitted.

Prohibited activities include:

  • Category 2 open fire: One to two burning piles no larger than two meters high and three meters wide or burning stubble or glass in an area of ​​less than 0.2 hectares
  • Fireworks, sky lanterns, exploding binary targets, air curtain burners
  • Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description except when used for campfires.

Campfires half a meter high and half a meter wide or smaller are not prohibited, and the ban does not apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes.

As of June 30, 2022, the lighting of open fires of the third category is prohibited in the district.

All of these prohibitions apply to public and private land, unless otherwise noted.

Anyone found with a prohibited open fire can be fined $1,150, ordered to pay an administrative penalty of $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year behind bars the bars. If the fire contributes to a forest fire, the person responsible can be ordered to pay all the costs of extinguishing the fire.
