The Minnesota Wild traded goaltender Cam Talbot to the Ottawa Senators for goaltender Filip Gustavsson on Tuesday. Minnesota did not retain any of Talbot’s salary.
“I’m excited about the move,” Talbot said. “They already had a good young core and made some good moves in the draft and have the space to make a splash in the next few days. I look forward to joining the group and helping lead them back to the playoffs.”
Talbot, 35, is going to the sixth team of his NHL career. Last season, he posted a 32-12-4 record with a 2.77 goals-against average and .911 save percentage.
Gustavsson, 24, joins goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in Minnesota. He posted a 5-12-1 record with a 3.55 GAA and .892 SV% last season. Minnesota has $4.279 million in cap space that could potentially be used to sign prospects Marco Rossi, Callen Addison and Adam Beckman or other free agents.
It’s the second goalie trade in back-to-back days for the Senators. On Monday, Ottawa traded goaltender Matt Murray to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Wild (53-22-7) finished second in the Central Division before losing to the St. Louis Blues in the playoffs. The Senators (33-42-7) finished seventh in the Atlantic Division, missing the playoffs.
