After Rory McIlroy said it would be “better for the sport” if an LIV golfer did not win the British Open, this weekend’s winner could take the Claret Jug with them to the breakaway league.
Cameron Smith’s victory press conference on Sunday included rumors about LIV from a Sky Sports reporter, which appeared to irritate the new major champion.
“I just won the British Open and you’re asking about it. I think that’s not so good,” said the Australian. “I don’t know, my friend. My team around me worries about all these things. I’m here to win golf tournaments.”
Although disappointed, Smith did little to curb the speculation that only increased after his victory. Smith finished his weekend with an eight-under 64 on Sunday, which included five straight birdies on the back nine. While Smith quickly shot down the rumors, he never denied any of them, which raised some eyebrows.
The questions have come to the fore as LIV Golf is rumored to soon announce a new line-up of players, led by the 28-year-old Smith. The rumors were further illustrated by the face of LIV, Greg Norman, who ecstatically congratulated Smith on Twitter for his win.
“Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi! A spectacular final round,” Norman told his compatriot. “A triumph for you and for Australia as the first Australian to win in 29 years. You’re in good company. Enjoy every moment of your The Open win.”
Henrik Stenson is also believed to be jumping ship for the Saudi-backed LIV League. If so, the Swede will be stripped of his Ryder Cup captaincy.

Despite the speculation, Smith said he won’t focus on those distractions after his win.
“I’m definitely going to see how many beers fit in that thing,” Smith said. “I’ll probably have about 20 board jugs.”
