GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) – Three people were fatally shot and two were wounded Sunday night at an Indiana shopping center after a man with a rifle opened fire in a diner and a civilian gunman shot and killed him, police said.
The man entered the Greenwood Park Mall with a rifle and several magazines of ammunition and began shooting into the diner, Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison said.
An armed civilian killed the man, Ison said at a news conference. A total of four people were killed and two were injured, he said.
Officers went to the mall around 6 p.m. for reports of a shooting. Authorities are searching the mall for other victims, but believe the shooting was limited to the food court.
Police confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the eatery, Ison said.
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and multiple other agencies are assisting in the investigation.
“We are disgusted by another incident like this in our country,” said Indianapolis Police Assistant Chief Chris Bailey.
Greenwood is a southern suburb of Indianapolis with a population of about 60,000.
There is no active threat to the area, Bailey said.
Authorities said they would provide more details Sunday evening.
