Two people were killed and one had to be airlifted to a hospital after a serious crash in Maple Ridge late Saturday night.
A BC RCMP spokesperson confirmed that police were called to the Lougheed Highway between 272 and 280 streets around 11:30 p.m. to the two-vehicle crash.
One of the vehicles was traveling eastbound and the other westbound at the time of the collision, the spokesman said, adding that investigators are still working to determine exactly what happened to cause the crash.
Two people in one of the cars died on the spot. The person in the other car was taken to a hospital, police said.
A spokesperson for British Columbia Emergency Health Services told CTV News that four ground ambulances and an air ambulance were dispatched and one patient was transported from the scene in serious condition.
Images from the scene show the almost unrecognizable wreckage of a gray sedan partially hidden by woods on the side of the road.
The car appeared to be torn in half by the force of the crash.
The incident closed the Lougheed Freeway for more than eight hours on Sunday.
DriveBC first tweeted about the incident around 12:30 a.m., saying Highway 7 was closed in both directions between 272nd and 280th streets.
The highway remained closed for several hours, with DriveBC announcing it had reopened just after 9am
