17:54 ET / 22:54 BST: What a night in Paris

The Champions League final was delayed due to some shocking scenes outside the stadium, but ended with Real Madrid dropping out of their 14th European title, beating Liverpool 1-0 in Paris after a goal by Vinicius Jr. in the second half.

Our first reaction file from Paris is live, with Mark Ogden quickly putting this finale in context.

Thank you very much for joining us. Check back later for more from Gab Marcotti, James Ollie, Mark Ogden and Julien Lawrence.

17:48 ET / 22:48 BST: Real Madrid was the team of fate

Real Madrid went through 7 knockout matches, averaging 18 shots and 1.75 xG per game … and won the trophy.

17:46 ET / 22:46 BST: A word about the winning manager

Carlo Ancelotti extends his incredible success in the European Cup to the fifth decade. Unbelievable, considering that he is only 62 years old.

Carlo Ancelotti won the European Cup / Champions League in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.

– Richard Jolly @ (@RichJolly) May 28, 2022

And it’s even weirder, considering he was Everton’s manager 12 months ago.

17:43 ET / 22:43 BST: Broken heart for Klopp

The defeat for Liverpool means that Jurgen Klopp is on par with former Juventus boss Marcello Lippi as the two managers who suffered the most defeats in the Champions League final (3) after falling to the last hurdle with Borussia Dortmund in 2013. and Liverpool in 2018 and 2022.

17:37 ET / 22:37 BST: a stunning achievement

Real Madrid was 20 (24-4) ahead in today’s #UCLfinal.

5:33 PM ET / 10:33 PM BST: FULL PERMISSION! Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

It all ended in Paris. Real Madrid won the Champions League again! They are European champions for a record extension for the 14th time, while the last whistle is heard around the cave Stade de France.

Liverpool made a valiant effort, but ultimately an inspired rearguard Los Blancoscombined with the decisive goal of Vinicius Junior, was enough for the victory of the Spanish grandmaster.

During the tournament, Carlo Ancelotti’s team developed the habit of never knowing when they were defeated, and this same gray endurance kept them in a good position until the end of the road. The reds withered. The whites refused to go down.

Fede Valverde’s lively evening ended in the 86th minute, when Real’s tireless wing gave way to Eduardo Camavinga. Ancelotti then continued, making another tactical change just minutes later when Danny Sebalos replaced veteran Luka Modric in the 90th minute.

With one hand on the trophy, Real is trying to figure this out.

Is this good?

2.6 xG in the goal preserved by Courtois so far 🧤

17:24 ET / 22:24 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

No one will pass! Courtois seems to be in completely invincible form, as the Real goalkeeper again denies Salah. We lost the number of saves that the Belgian made, but it can be said that he is currently the favorite when it comes to the awards for the Man of the Match.

17:22 ET / 22:22 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

Some good play by Firmino gives Nabi Keita a golden chance to steal a vital equalizer, but the Liverpool player makes a terrible blow from his shot.

The midfielder tried to shoot the door with the outside of his foot, but instead touched his foot, firing awkwardly high and wide.

17:18 ET / 22:18 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

Only 10 minutes to Paris! Can Liverpool equalize?

Trent Alexander-Arnold pulled a low shot away from the goal and Jurgen Klopp saw enough. In fact, the German rolls the dice with a double substitution in which Nabi Keita replaces Jordan Henderson and Roberto Firmino replaces Tiago.

17:14 ET / 22:14 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

Another wild fact about the only goal scorer tonight …

Vinicius Jr. was born 49 days after Real Madrid won the #UCLFinal 1999-00 at this very stadium – 3-0 against Valencia at the Stade de France.

– The Analyst (@OptaAnalyst) May 28, 2022

17:10 ET / 22:10 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

At 21 years and 320 days, Vinicius Jr. is already the fifth youngest goal scorer in the history of UCL finals after Marco Asensio (21 years and 133 days), Lars Ricken (20 years and 322 days), Carlos Alberto (19 years and 167 days) and Patrick Kluivert (18 years and 327 days).

17:09 ET / 22:09 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

In the first shift of the evening, Diogo Jota came off the Liverpool bench to replace Luis Diaz on the left.

Thibaut Courtois makes another decent save to thwart Mohamed Salah as Liverpool try to get back in the game. The striker of the “reds” fired a shot at the far post, but the tall Belgian was more than equal. The Real stopper has been a human wall for Real so far tonight.

17:02 ET / 22:02 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 1

He is just under half an hour away from Paris and Liverpool need a goal.

Vinicius has already scored 22 goals in all competitions this season, having ruled just six for Real last season. What a year the young striker is!

Real Madrid took the lead with a roar thanks to Vinicius Jr., who pressed Fede Valverde’s low cross into the far post. The Brazilian winger remained in an acre of space in the penalty area after withdrawing from his marker Trent Alexander-Arnold, and the Stade de France exploded in a cacophony of noise.

16:51 ET / 21:51 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 0

The second half started in Paris and both teams continued in almost the same spirit. Liverpool sent several encouraging crossings in Real’s penalty area, but the possession continued to turn before anyone could do anything significant.

16:44 ET / 21:44 BST: Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 0

Liverpool recorded 10 shots against Real Madrid in the first half. Only one team has ever tried more shots in the first leg of the Champions League final and that is Bayern Munich (16 shots) against Chelsea in 2012.

For the record, Chelsea won this match by holding the Bavarians on penalties.

16:42 ET / 21:42 BST: Second half begins!

Real Madrid has set up a big screen at the Bernabeu to allow fans who can’t go to Paris to watch the final at their stadium.

The collective reaction to Benzema’s rejected goal almost summed up the confusion and controversy surrounding the decision.

16:27 ET / 21:27 BST: How is Liverpool 0, Real Madrid 0 at half time ??

Well, we lasted 45 minutes, but not without a dramatic end to the first half.

With only three minutes until the end of the half, Karim Benzema has the ball in the net for Real Madrid, but the goal was written off after the accumulation was marked offside. Liverpool were extremely careless in the back and they must feel as if they missed each other there.

After Alison, Conate and Fabinho swung, Liverpool looked in complete disarray until Benzema threw, but the Reds fled after a lengthy VAR check ruled that the penultimate touch in the accumulation was an involuntary push from Fabinho’s knee. As the Brazilian did not play the ball intentionally, Benzema was assessed as offside – but only after a few minutes of disappointing consultations between officials.

With Liverpool fans maybe …
