Coronavirus: Covid increases risk of Alzheimer’s, warns new study

Dr. Pardis Zarifkar, lead author of the Department of Neurology, Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark, explained; “More than two years after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the exact nature and evolution of the effects of COVID-19 on neurological disorders have remained uncharacteristic.

“Previous studies have linked neurological syndromes, but it is not yet known whether COVID-19 also affects the incidence of specific neurological diseases and whether it differs from other respiratory infections.

“However, the increased risk of most neurological diseases is not higher in patients with COVID-19 than in people who have been diagnosed with influenza or other respiratory diseases. Patients with COVID-19 had a 1.7-fold higher risk of ischemic stroke than those with influenza and bacterial pneumonia over the age of 80 years.

“The incidence of other neurodegenerative diseases such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Guillain-Barré syndrome and narcolepsy has not increased after COVID-19, influenza or pneumonia.
