Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) approved a new state budget Thursday, but vetoed funds for a Pasco County baseball training facility to be used by the Tampa Bay Rays, a move that comes shortly after MLB tweeted in support. of gun control last week.
DeSantis, an avid proponent of gun rights, vetoed funding proposed by Sen. Danny Burgess (R), which was expected to be signed in the state budget a week after the broadcasts showed support for gun control measures.
The team reported on gun control on social media channels on May 26, following the deadly shootings in Uwalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York, instead of covering its game against the New York Yankees.
Reis Brooks’ pitcher Reilly is from Uwalde, a town of just 16,000 people, where 19 elementary school students and two teachers were killed by an 18-year-old shooter.
“It’s just a tragedy. “Obviously, growing up there and going to that school, it kind of comes home,” Reilly said last week, according to the Associated Press. “It’s a small and cohesive community, so it’s obviously difficult.”
The Rays have partnered with Everytown for Gun Safety, a non-profit organization that advocates for gun control and education, to share facts about gun violence.

“When a firearm is used in a mass attack, it results in six times more people being shot than when other weapons are used,” Rays tweeted, quoting Everytown, among other facts.
DeSantis has not spoken publicly about his decision to veto funding for the practice.
