New York has discovered its fifth suspected case of monkeypox, health chiefs revealed on Thursday night, bringing the national number to 22.

Empire officials are yet to release additional details on the case, including the sex of the patients and whether they are related to international travel.

But the new infection makes America’s 8 millionth city a hotspot for tropical disease – which is native to West Africa.

Four more cases of monkeypox were reported yesterday, with Chicago, Los Angeles and Philadelphia reporting their first patients affected by the virus.

Most cases are found in gay and bisexual men who have recently returned from international travel. But there are also a number of “close contacts” of cases in the sign that the transmission from person to person can take place on American soil.

More than 700 cases have been reported worldwide, most in Spain and the United Kingdom, where more than 200 have been reported.

America has already detected 22 cases of monkeypox in 11 states – with Pennsylvania and Illinois joining the list of cities to detect the virus yesterday

New York’s new case is positive for the orthopox virus, a family that includes smallpox and monkeypox.

The sample will now be sent for testing to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to confirm that it is a case of monkeypox. It is very likely that a person with orthopox will have monkeypox.

Revealing its fifth infection yesterday, the New York Ministry of Health said on Twitter: “One additional person tested positive for the orthopox virus in New York, which is thought to be monkeypox.

“Five cases have been identified so far.

Reduce the number of your sexual partners to help fight monkeypox, calls on the World Health Organization

People need to reduce the number of their sexual partners to help fight the spread of monkeypox, the World Health Organization called on Wednesday.

Dr Hans Kluge, head of the WHO’s European department, warned that the current outbreak of tropical disease “may not be under control”.

He warned that Europe had become the new epicenter of the virus, with the outbreak linked to the sexual transmission of raves and festivals on the continent.

Dr Kluge insisted that the virus “would not require the same comprehensive measures for the population” as Covid, but said “significant and urgent” action was needed to prevent more cases.

He added that although the cases were concentrated in men who had sex with men, nothing stopped it from spreading to other groups.

The first case in the city was of a man who was hospitalized in Manhattan after suffering from symptoms of the virus.

Details of the other cases are not reported.

Monkeypox has already spread to 11 states with the second highest number of cases in California (four).

Florida has three infections, while Colorado and Utah have two.

Georgia, Massachusetts, Virginia, Washington, Pennsylvania and Illinois have reported one infection each.

Monkeypox is usually spread by physical contact with infectious skin lesions in patients.

People who become infected initially suffer from fever for the first 21 days before the rash breaks out on their face and spreads to the rest of the body.

It can take up to four weeks for the symptoms to clear up, as the rash goes through several stages before finally disappearing.

Most cases are mild, but between one in 10 and one in 100 people who become infected die from the disease.

There are many more cases of monkeypox in Europe than in the United States, where the virus may have become established.

Spain reported the most cases on the continent (208), followed by England (206) and Portugal (138).

WHO leaders have suggested that the continent’s epidemic is linked to dangerous sex at two raves in Spain and Belgium.

As in America, the cases are mostly among gay and bisexual men, but health officials warn that nothing is stopping the disease from spreading to other groups.

There are also growing calls to control the outbreak, with experts saying that if the virus is allowed to continue to spread, it could spread to the animal population – which will become a reservoir.

On Wednesday, the head of the WHO’s European department, Dr. Hans Kluge, called on people to reduce the number of their sexual partners to help stop the epidemic.

He also warned that tropical disease “may not be controlled” in Europe, as there are still undiscovered transmission chains.
