Bhagavan Doc Antal, the self-styled guru who drew attention with his series on the popular Netflix documentary series Tiger King, was arrested by FBI agents in South Carolina on Friday and remains in jail on unspecified charges, according to the sheriff’s records.
Antl, a well-known animal breeder and zoo owner featured on Rolling Stone’s 2015 profile, was detained at about 5:40 p.m. in Horry County.
The arrest is Antall’s latest entanglement with law enforcement, following charges of wildlife trafficking, animal cruelty and other charges in late 2020. The indictment came after a month-long investigation by the animal rights department of the Attorney General. of Virginia Mark Herring. Two of Antal’s daughters were also charged with violating the Endangered Species and Animal Cruelty Act as a result of the indictment.
Representatives of the Myrtle Beach safari on Antal did not respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment.
In addition to Antall’s legal problems, additional allegations of sexual misconduct and predatory behavior – many of them by women, both formerly working and romantically engaged to Antal – led him to win his own documentary about the Tiger King, released in 2021
