HARISBURG, Pennsylvania (AP) – Former hedge fund chief executive David McCormick has ceded Republican primary elections in Pennsylvania to the U.S. Senate to renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, ending his campaign Friday night as he admitted that the current census across the state will not give him enough votes to cover the deficit.
After a bitter campaign that covered millions of dollars in commercials for the attack, McCormick made a favorable concession, promising to help unite the party behind Oz.
“It’s clear to me now that the census is largely over that we have a nominee,” McCormick said at an election campaign party at a Pittsburgh hotel. “And today I called Mehmet Oz to congratulate him on his victory.”
McCormick’s concession cemented a joint election campaign between Oz, backed by former President Donald Trump, and Democrat John Feterman in what is expected to be one of the nation’s leading Senate contests.
National parties are already sponsoring commercials for television attacks in a presidential warring country that is still irritated by Trump’s baseless allegations of stolen elections in 2020.
The result could help determine control of the narrowly divided chamber, and Democrats see it as perhaps their best chance to take a seat in the race to replace two-term Republican Sen. Pat Toomey.
More than two weeks after the primary, Republicans began considering bitter primary elections further deepened by recounts and mail ballot lawsuits.
“I think it will be fine, I don’t think there will be any problems,” said Pat Poprick, chairman of the Republican Party in the densely populated Bucks County, where members of the state party commission approved McCormick. “A lot of people I know liked both candidates, they thought they were both good and they had to make a last-minute decision between them.
In a statement, Oz said he was grateful for the promise of support for McCormick.
Prior to the recount, Oz led McCormick with 972 votes out of 1.34 million votes counted in the May 17 primary. The Associated Press has not announced a winner in the race, as an automatic count is underway and the difference between the two candidates is only 0.07 percentage points.
Feterman, the state’s vice governor, admitted earlier in a statement in a statement that he nearly died when he suffered a stroke just days before his election. He said he had ignored warning signs and the doctor’s advice to take blood thinners for years.
Oz, best known as the host of the daily TV show The Dr. Oz Show, had to overcome a series of advertisements for attacks and concerns among Trump’s staunch supporters about his conservative data on guns, abortion, transgender rights and other major Republican issues.
The 61-year-old Oz relies on Trump’s support as proof of his conservative good faith, while Trump attacks Oz’s rivals and claims that Oz has the best chance of winning in November in the presidential state.
Oz had a little history with the Republican Party – but he had been friends with Trump for almost 20 years and, as Trump told him on the Oz show in 2016, “you know my wife is a big fan of your show.”
McCormick, meanwhile, has made Oz’s dual citizenship in Turkey a problem in the race, suggesting that Oz would pose a risk to national security. If elected, Oz will be the country’s first Muslim senator.
Born in the United States, Oz served in the Turkish army and voted in the 2018 election. Oz said he would renounce his Turkish citizenship if he won the November election, and accused McCormick of making “fan” attacks.
Oz and McCormick covered the airwaves with political commercials for months, spending millions of their own money. Virtually unknown to voters four months ago, McCormick had to introduce himself to voters, and he dug up Oz’s long-standing record as a public figure for material in attack commercials. He received help from the super PAC, which supports him, which spent $ 20 million.
Like McCormick, Oz moved from the state to run in Pennsylvania.
Oz, a Harvard graduate, New York Times bestselling author and self-proclaimed wellness advocate, has lived for the past few decades on a mansion in Cliffside Park, New Jersey, over the Hudson River overlooking Manhattan – attracting accusations of political fraud and fraud. .
The famous cardiac surgeon emphasized his ties to Pennsylvania, saying that he grew up just above the state border in Delaware, went to medical school in Philadelphia and married a native of Pennsylvania.
Prior to his candidacy, McCormick was a Wall Street celebrity, ran the world’s largest hedge fund, and had strong ties to the Republican Party, dating back to his tenure under former President George W. Bush. His wife, Dina Powell, was Trump’s deputy national security adviser and had strong party ties.
McCormick had long considered running for public office and moved from his home on the luxury Gold Coast in Connecticut to a house in Pittsburgh before announcing his candidacy.
He highlighted his ties to Pennsylvania: growing up on a wrestling and football star in high school before going to West Point and fighting in the Gulf War. He also spent 10 years in Pittsburgh in business, giving him stronger claims to Pennsylvania than Oz.
Like Oz, McCormick worked hard to win Trump’s approval, and he insisted he was the authentic “America First” candidate, citing Trump’s nickname for his governing philosophy.
However, Trump has attacked McCormick many times over the past two weeks of the campaign, leading a rally in Oz where he called McCormick “a candidate for special interests and globalists and the Washington establishment.”
