The game is coming back for E3.
After a three-year absence, E3 – historically the games industry’s largest confab – is scheduled to return to the Los Angeles Convention Center in the second week of June 2023.
The Entertainment Software Association, the trade group that runs the convention, also announced a partnership to produce E3 2023 with ReedPop, the event production company behind PAX, New York Comic Con, Star Wars Celebration and others.
After the 2020 convention was canceled due to COVID, ESA held an all-virtual E3 2021 from June 12 to 15, 2021. This year’s convention was completely canceled: after canceling the in-person event in Los Angeles due to continued concerns about the spread of the coronavirus, ESA said , that it won’t host a virtual show in 2022 and will focus on “delivering a revitalized physical and digital experience at E3 next summer.”
E3 2023 will once again welcome publishers, developers, journalists, content creators, manufacturers, buyers and licensors. In addition, the event will feature digital showcases and custom components for consumers. The ESA, announcing the return of E3 to LA, touted next year’s event as “a week of titanic AAA reveals, world-shattering premieres and exclusive access to the future of video games.”
“We are thrilled to bring back E3 as an in-person event with ReedPop, a global leader in producing pop culture events,” Stanley Pierre-Louis, ESA president and CEO, said in a statement. “The past three years have confirmed that E3 brings our industry together like no other event.”
ESA has not announced specific dates for E3 2023. Media registration will begin in late 2022. Confirmed exhibitors, hotels and travel guides, event schedules and other details will be shared in the coming months, the organization said.
In 2019, the last time E3 was held in person, the convention drew 66,100 attendees, according to the ESA.
A few years ago, ReedPop made a formal pitch to ESA to take over E3, Variety previously reported, but that never happened.
