While Ellen DeGeneres hosted the final episode of the Ellen DeGeneres Show in May, she shared how the series – a 19-season giant of shaking, awarding and scaring celebrities – first aired.
“Twenty-five years ago, they canceled my show because they didn’t want a lesbian to be in prime time once a week. And I said, “Okay, then I’ll be every day of the day,” DeGeneres said.
The end was bitter. DeGeneres’ reputation as a lover of doing good has been called into question after allegations by former employees that her producers created a toxic work environment on the set.
A sea of changes has hit the daily format this year, as many veteran hosts call it a day. As the audience flows from broadcast to streaming, the format has not seen such a shake-up since Oprah left her robe as queen of the day in 2011.
The day will look different from now on: a former Oprah producer

Last week, Wendy Williams’ favorite unusual show ended with a modest note – 12 seasons later – without Williams herself attending. In fact, the series has been a revolving door for guest hosts since July 2021, when the former shocking player took a health break.
In the fall, her daytime will be occupied by former The View co-host and actress Sherry Shepard, who often replaced Williams while on vacation.
Although Williams never reached Ellen’s popularity levels, she and her show were praised and sometimes criticized for their unfiltered nature. In recent years, Williams has become a popular internet meme, with TikTok users gathering highlights and highlights.
q12: 06 The controversy in the Ellen DeGeneres show explained
On this week’s on-screen panel q, arts and entertainment writers Terry Hart and Ishani Nat unpacked allegations of intimidation, racism and sexual misconduct behind the scenes of the Ellen DeGeneres Show. They are also discussing the popular Netflix Indian Matchmaking series.
“People are thinking [the] I’m talking [genre] it’s so easy. They think they just sit and can talk. It’s incredibly nuanced, “said Candy Carter, a former producer of the Oprah Winfrey Show, The View and Tamron Hall.
“You have to be able to manage content and manage a show, but you also have to be very vulnerable and sensitive. And it’s not so much for you, but enough for you that people are interested… you don’t know who that person is until you’re “in your seat.”
After a 31-year career, trash-trusted TV presenter Mori Povic has left her paternity tests: “Enough is enough!” The host said in a statement to leave. Queer Eye co-host Caramo Brown, a frequent guest on Maury, is leading a self-help program created by Povic’s team this fall.
Dr. Oz left his show for a healthy lifestyle in January. Oprah’s retired surgeon and protégé, whose critics say he promotes quackery and dubious products, is running for the United States Senate. His program was replaced by The Good Dish by his daughter Daphne Oz, which was canceled shortly thereafter.
WATCH | First promotion for the Jennifer Hudson Show:
Tamron Hall took the Emmy Day on Friday for her eponymous talk show, and EGOT winner singer and actress Jennifer Hudson is working with DeGeneres producers on a show of the same name, which will premiere in September.
The question is whether these new programs in the traditional format will have an audience – and where that audience will watch them. Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table talk, for example, airs on Facebook Watch and usually lasts less than 30 minutes.
“[Daytime television is] it’s just not as lucrative a space or as popular a space as people move online, “said Stacey Lee Kong, founder of the pop culture newsletter Friday Things.
Carter, who left her role as executive producer at Tamron Hall in 2021, said she believes she still has an appetite for the day; it may just look different in the future.
“It won’t necessarily be a 30-minute show. This will be a five-minute segment on a streamer or social media site, compared to the one-hour, very expensive syndicated show that has to be sold at stations across the country. I think this model can be dropped. “
Programs in the traditional format extend the shelf life and reach of the audience on social media. DeGeneres has garnered millions of views on YouTube by posting virus-friendly snippets from its show.
Think Nicki Minaj, who sings with young fans Sofia Grace and Rosie, or the Gangnam Style Psy singer, who teaches Britney Spears her distinctive dance. Eventually, DeGeneres has just launched its own version of the video platform: Ellentube.

Pop singer Kelly Clarkson, who won a seven-day Emmy on Friday for Season 3 of the Kelly Clarkson Show, seems to be filling the void DeGeneres has left. Leaving aside the hilarious interviews with celebrities, Clarkson’s videos with covers of songs by other artists called “Kellyoke” are popular on TikTok.
“Sometimes you don’t want to be as serious as The View; you want something light, fluffy, sparkling. And Kelly Clarkson can provide that for you,” said Gillian Bowe, senior editor of Daytime Confidential. Clarkson’s syndicated talk show has moved to DeGeneres’ best afternoon time this year.
Oprah’s legacy continues 11 years later
Before Ellen’s show began in 2003, Oprah Winfrey’s talk show had been airing since 1986 – worthy of respect among Maurice, Ricky Lakes, Jerry Springs and Jenny Jones of the era. Until the end of its release in 2011, it was an important meeting meeting for many, a cultural giant.
“You were just expected to watch Oprah the same way you watch news at six o’clock or news at 11 o’clock,” Kong said.

The television landscape has changed dramatically since Winfrey left in 2011. It’s no longer just a matter of daily programs competing with each other, Kong said: “now competition is really everything.”
“So you’re not competing with other daily TV presenters: you’re competing with TikTok and Instagram and you know whatever’s going on on any other platform. So, I think the change is a little more obvious, “she said.
Not everyone is bad news to broadcast. In December 2020, data firm Nielsen announced that the pandemic had led to an increase in daytime television viewing throughout North America as the professional class began working from home.
More than 26 million Canadians watch daily television every day, television advertising company ThinkTV told CBC News in an email. But the most popular daily shows are news programs and soap operas, it said.
When Oprah’s last episode aired 11 years ago, Nielsen announced that it had attracted 16.4 million viewers. In contrast, 1.8 million viewers joined Ellen’s last show in May.
A new dawn for black, racial hosts
Part of both Oprah’s and Ellen’s legacy is that they normalized the presence of blacks and lesbians, respectively, by running their own mass television shows.
While racist television hosts were seen as a “risky investment” among executives, the appearance of Hudson, Brown, Hall and Shepard on the daily stage shows that these attitudes have developed, Kong said.
The more opportunities the BIPOC hosts have to demonstrate success, the less common this story will be: “Oh, I have to get approval, or it’s a niche, or I have to convince you that it’s worth it,” Kong said.
As with any genre or program format, the day just shakes, Bowe said.
“She needs to be refreshed, so to speak. I mean, there are still people who ask, “Well, who will be the next Oprah?”
