F1 LIVE News: Lewis Hamilton finds “hope” and Carlos Sainz makes a bold statement for Ferrari

F1 Grand Prix of Canada 2022 – Return to the backyard of Gilles

Max Verstappen withstood the late challenge from Carlos Sainz to win the Canadian Grand Prix and further increase his championship lead. After Formula 1 returned to Montreal for the first time in three years, it was Red Bull of Verstappen who took the checkered flag and moved 46 points to the top of the standings. Sainz was quick in the final stages after a period behind the safety car, but could not find a way past Verstappen and had to settle for second place, the pair joined the podium by Lewis Hamilton – the seven-time world champion who was third for Mercedes.

“The safety car didn’t help,” Verstappen said. “In general, Ferrari were very fast in the race. In the end, it was really exciting. I gave him everything I had, and I saw Carlos do the same. The last few tours were a lot of fun. Fortunately, this year we are fast in the right, so that helps a lot. ” Hamilton teammate George Russell continued to hold the record for the top five all season, finishing fourth ahead of Charles Leclerc, who has recovered from the starting 19th to get a decent number of points for Ferrari. The Alpines were sixth and seventh, Esteban Ocon managed to finish ahead of Fernando Alonso, while Valteri Botas, Guanyu Zhou and local favorite Lance Stroll finished the points.

Alonso complains of engine problems and lack of luck

After star Q3, where he finished second behind Max Verstappen, Fernando Alonso of Alpine, but managed to finish only seventh at the end of the race behind his teammate Esteban Ocon.

Alonso was left to deal with an engine problem that cost him speed in a straight line, and an additional penalty for weaving brought him down to ninth in what was a racing day of oblivion for the 40-year-old.

“We were unlucky in the safety car,” Alonso explained. “We decided to box as soon as the safety car ran out. Other people behind us got lucky and overtook us.

“On lap 20 or something, I had a problem with the engine with the battery, I cut the straight lines and lost eight tenths per lap. I had to spend in the corners to try to keep up the pace and DRS. It was a very difficult race.

“Still positive. The car was very fast this weekend. We had no problem with the engine P3 in the race in front of Lewis. Without the engine problem, this was still possible. “

Sainz is happy, although he lost to Verstappen

Carlos Sainz had to settle for second place behind Max Verstappen at the Canadian Grand Prix, but the Spaniard is pleased with the pace Ferrari showed this weekend.

“I pushed straight,” Sainz said. “I didn’t leave an inch to the walls, I tried everything to get ahead of Max. We just didn’t have the pace delta to get past Max.

“We were faster throughout the race, but you only need a little more to get through. I am especially pleased with the race, with the way we managed to put pressure on Max throughout the race.

“We were very close to winning today, so I will take the positives in the next race.”

Verstappen admits that Ferrari were faster than Red Bull in Canada

Max Verstappen admitted that Ferrari were faster than Red Bull in the Canadian Grand Prix.

The world champion had to keep the late challenge from Carlos Sainz in the last fifteen laps to win, increasing his lead in the championship to 46 points.

“Overall, it was quite a difficult race for us,” he told Sky Sports F1. “I was hoping for a little more pace from the car, but Ferrari looked pretty fast in the race. It was hard to compete with Carlos on tour.

“The last fifteen laps were full and I knew I couldn’t afford to make a mistake because he was so close to me. I think [they were faster] today, absolutely. So we need to understand that. One race we have an advantage, then they look fast again, so we are very close.

“It’s very important to always have a good lead, but you also know that it can change very quickly. There are always things you can do better. ”

The Alpine-confident Piastri will be a Formula One driver in 2023

Alpine boss Otmar Schaffnauer is confident that Oscar Piastri will be on the grid of Formula One in 2023.

The 21-year-old Australian repeated the achievement of both Charles Leclerc and George Russell, winning the Formula 3 title or GP3, as it was known at the time, and the Formula 2 crown in successive seasons.

But Piastri can’t find a place in the Formula One grid for 2022, although he is backed by Alpine, but looks set to get his chance next year.

Asked by reporters in Canada if he thought Piastri would be on the grid in 2023, Schafnauer said yes.

“We’re not talking about the details of our contracts with the pilots, and that’s something we never do,” Schaffnauer said. “So as much as I want to tell you, I don’t think I can.

“But when I say yes, that’s the plan.”

Hamilton gave “hope” after the final of the podium in Canada

Lewis Hamilton says his third place in the Canadian Grand Prix has given him hope that Mercedes can return to competitiveness this year.

The seven-time champion had not scored a podium since the first race of the season in Bahrain, but his result in Montreal ended a series of difficult races.

Hamilton was repeatedly overtaken by teammate George Russell this season, but the decision to switch to soft tires in qualifying eventually came against the 24-year-old this weekend, giving Hamilton an advantage in the race, starting four places ahead of his teammate.

Russell finished in the top five of every race this season, including in Canada, where he came in eighth in qualifying to finish just behind Hamilton in fourth. His extremely impressive form this season has raised questions about Hamilton’s future in Formula One, but it remains to be seen who will prove to be the faster driver by the end of the year.

“It gave me a lot of hope that there is more to come from this car, that the potential is really there if we can make the right adjustments,” Hamilton said. “We’re just trying to progress as a team,

“Going forward, we will be a little more careful to do too many experiments, because it really bothers you over the weekend, especially if you only have the first and second dry workouts.

“There are a lot of lessons to be learned this weekend and improvements we can make in the future, but really fast today. It’s so nice to see. This has not always been the case with this car. “

His teammate George Russell continued his record of the top five finishes throughout the season, finishing fourth to Charles Leclerc, who recovered from the starting 19th and won a decent number of points for Ferrari.

George Russell for the guinea pig

George Russell said the problem with the guinea pig – the car that jumps hard at speed – remains a major concern for Mercedes, despite their improved performance in Canada.

“It was uneven, it was definitely uneven there,” he told Sky F1. “We weren’t a guinea pig, we were just jumping down a lot and just hitting the ground. So tonight will be a good night’s sleep again. “

Lewis Hamilton is “defeated” to finish on the podium of the Canadian Grand Prix

The seven-time world champion is battling his Mercedes this season and has just reached Montreal.

The design of this year’s cars has led some teams to suffer from jumping – known as guinea pigs – at high speeds, with Mercedes among the worst.

Hamilton needed help to get out of his car after the Azerbaijani Grand Prix a week ago, and he needed acupuncture and cryotherapy on his back to get to the bars.

The 37-year-old finished fourth in the rain in Montreal on Saturday and ranked one better in the race, taking the 184th podium of his career, but only second since the difficult 2022.

Carlos Sainz maintains Ferrari “faster” than Red Bull in Canada despite the loss

“This weekend I was faster for the first time – I mean all season, but for the first time in the championship,” said Carlos Sainz after the Canadian Grand Prix.

“I was the fastest person on the track, both in the middle and in the hard. I grabbed Max in both cases and felt comfortable with the car.

“I was everywhere, close by [the] walls, you know, with confidence – raking it, and I felt comfortable there, so it’s a pity I didn’t win the first victory. “

The next Silverstone for the British Grand Prix

The next exit in Formula 1 returns to the United Kingdom, as the sport heads to Silverstone ahead of what is expected to be another record audience.

Will Red Bull win for the seventh time in a row, which means that Max Verstappen can increase his lead in the championship?
