Major League Baseball imposed penalties and fines stemming from Sunday’s fight between the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels, which resulted in eight expulsions, including six players and two managers.

Between the two teams, including the entire team staff, 12 people were punished.

Angels

  • Manager Phil Nevin has been penalized for 10 games “for deliberately throwing pitcher Andrew Wonz while warnings were in force”.
  • Injured third baseman Anthony Randon has been penalized for five games he will have to serve when he returns to play. (He is expected to miss the rest of this season, so this will lead to 2023.) Randon is also not allowed to sit on the Angels bench for the next seven games.
  • Pitcher Andrew Wantz has been penalized for three games for the aforementioned pitch.
  • Assistant coach Dom Chiti received a five-match ban “for his actions during the incident”.
  • Pitcher Ryan Tepera has been penalized for three games for his actions.
  • Pitcher Raisel Iglesias received a two-match ban for his actions.
  • Reserve coach Ray Montgomery won two games for his actions.
  • Translator Manny Del Campo received two games for his actions.
  • Catching coach Bill Hasselman was penalized for one match for his actions.

Sailors

  • Outfielder Jesse Winker has been penalized for seven games for “actions that led to the incident and for battle”.
  • Shortstop JP Crawford received a penalty of five games per battle.
  • The sailors’ outfielder Julio Rodriguez won two games “for his actions”.

The seeds for the quarrel were planted on Saturday night when Mariner’s relief Eric Swanson threw a high and tense blow against Mike Trout. Trout and the Angels made an exception, and the mood swelled on Sunday after Andrew Wonz of Los Angeles threw himself against Julio Rodriguez and then hit Jesse Winker.

Winker seems to have entered into a screaming match with Angel’s interim captain Phil Nevin. From then on, conditions worsened, with Winker and Shortstop JP Crawford striking as part of a massive donnybrook.

“It didn’t matter what was said,” Winker told MLB.com. “They threw a ball over Julio’s head and I wasn’t really trying to talk to anyone.”

Angels who are closer, Raisel Iglesias inflamed the situation by throwing a container of sunflower seeds in the field.

Angels and Mariners played eight games in 11 days.
