The city of Miami warned on Saturday afternoon that several roads are not accessible. At least one beach was temporarily closed. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials warned that the risk of weekend floods was “high” across the county, especially in low-lying and poorly drained areas, and urged residents not to try to walk or drive through flooded waters. . About 100 vehicles were blocked overnight in the Miami floods, fire chief Joseph Zahralban told CNN’s WSVN affiliate. The county also issued a warning banning swimming in certain areas after officials announced a sewer overflow. The overflow of wastewater at a local plant has “the potential to mix with flooded water in the facility and drain to neighboring surface water,” the county said in a press release. Residents and visitors were also urged to avoid activities such as fishing and boating.
Flood monitoring was in effect in South Florida, including Miami, until 8 p.m. on Saturday.
The National Weather Service (NWS) said the heaviest rainstorms from the storm system had moved into the sea until late afternoon, but warned that some isolated rains could follow and cause localized flooding. Follow the storm system here
Earlier, the NWS office in Miami reported that between 6 and 11 inches of rain fell in some areas.
Record rainfall was recorded on Saturday, June 4, in West Palm Beach (which saw 4.5 inches of water), Fort Lauderdale (which saw 6.55 inches) and Miami (which recorded 5.24 inches), according to NWS.
Potential Tropical Cycle 1 was poorly organized as it headed for the Atlantic Ocean on Saturday night. At approximately 17:00 ET, the National Hurricane Center was the center of a storm about 40 miles northeast of Fort Pierce.
The storm is expected to intensify
The storm had strong winds of about 45 mph and was moving rapidly northeast at approximately 18 mph, according to the center.
An earlier warning of tropical storms off the east coast of Florida was lifted on Saturday night, but the warning remained for the northwestern Bahamas, and monitoring of tropical storms was in effect for Bermuda, the center said.
The latest runway from the center of the hurricanes shows that the storm system is getting stronger enough to turn into a tropical storm Alex within the next 12 hours, then move north from Bermuda to Monday.
